About the role

TwoBirds finds grants that fit an organization’s work and drafts the applications from its project details and documents. The organization reviews every draft and submits it themselves.

As our Grant Writer, you’ll define what a strong draft looks like and make sure what we produce is accurate, specific to the funder, and ready to be read by a reviewer.

What you’ll do

• Review drafted applications across many funders and program types, and write down what separates a fundable draft from a weak one.
• Turn funder guidelines, scoring criteria, and required sections into clear drafting instructions and checklists.
• Build reference answers and examples for common sections, including needs statements, project narratives, evaluation plans, and budget justifications.
• Find where drafts overstate, invent, or leave out facts, and shape the questions we ask organizations before drafting begins.
• Work with engineers to test changes to how drafts are produced and judge whether each change made them better.

What we’re looking for

• Substantial experience writing grant applications that were submitted to real funders, such as foundations, government programs, or both.
• A working understanding of how reviewers read and score applications.
• Plain, precise writing, and the discipline not to claim anything an organization can’t support.
• Comfort giving specific, written feedback on other people’s drafts.
• The ability to work independently and explain your reasoning.

Nice to have

• Experience with federal, state, or provincial grant programs.
• Experience writing for different kinds of organizations, including charities, small businesses, and public bodies.
• Time spent reviewing or scoring applications as a reviewer or program officer.
